The Skye Trail is not a gentle stroll. Walkhighlands calls it a challenging, unofficial route aimed at experienced hillwalkers, with no waymarks and, in places, no path at all. Its guide splits the route into seven stages that add up to roughly 127 km, from Rubha Hunish in the north of the Isle of Skye to Broadford in the south. Stages run from about 4.5 to 10 hours of walking each, following much of the Trotternish Ridge and passing beneath the Cuillin.
By the end, your legs, hips and shoulders have spent days carrying a rucksack up and down the Scottish Highlands. Walkhighlands notes that direct bus services run to Portree from Inverness, which makes the Highland capital a practical place to stop and recover. This guide explains what is happening in those tired muscles, what research says about massage for sore legs, and which treatment suits which ache when you book massage in Inverness at Cholly’s Thai Massage & Therapy.

Why do your legs hurt so much after the Skye Trail?
The heavy ache that builds a day or two after a big effort is often delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. A systematic review in Frontiers in Physiology explains that exhaustive or unaccustomed exercise, particularly movements involving eccentric contractions, frequently causes temporary muscle damage that leads to DOMS. An eccentric contraction happens when a muscle lengthens while it is working, which is exactly what your quadriceps do on every steep descent.
Over seven stages, that load adds up. The longest stage, Flodigarry to The Storr, is listed at 27.7 km and 8.5 to 10 hours of walking. Your quadriceps and calves absorb most of the descent, your glutes and hip flexors drive the climbs, and the muscles across your shoulders and upper back hold the weight of your pack. Uneven ground keeps the small muscles of your feet and ankles working throughout.
DOMS is not the same as an injury. It typically feels like a broad, tender stiffness across a muscle group on both sides of the body. Sharp pain, pain in one leg only, or pain that is getting worse needs a different response, which we cover in the GP section below.
Does massage help with leg pain after a long walk? What the research says
The strongest evidence we can point to is the same 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Physiology. It pooled randomised controlled trials of massage after strenuous exercise: 11 articles, 23 data points and 504 participants. The table shows how much lower soreness ratings were in the massage groups than in groups with no intervention.
Time after exercise | Soreness difference vs no intervention (SMD) | 95% confidence interval |
24 hours | −0.61 | −1.17 to −0.05 |
48 hours | −1.51 | −2.24 to −0.77 |
72 hours | −1.46 | −2.59 to −0.33 |
All time points combined | −1.16 | −1.60 to −0.72 |
SMD means standardised mean difference. A negative value means lower soreness in the massage group. Source: Frontiers in Physiology, 2017; 8:747.
In plain terms, soreness ratings were lower after massage at every time point measured, and the gap was widest at 48 and 72 hours. The review also found lower blood levels of creatine kinase, a marker used to assess muscle damage, in the massage groups (SMD −0.64). Three honest caveats apply:
- The review looked at massage as a category. It did not compare Thai massage with other styles, and it was not specific to hillwalking.
- The headline comparison is massage versus no intervention, so it cannot tell you which style of massage is best.
- The authors conclude that massage could be effective for easing DOMS. That is supportive evidence, not a guarantee for any one person.

Thai massage or deep tissue after a multi-day walk?
If you are torn between the two, our guide to Thai massage vs deep tissue covers the differences in detail. In short, traditional Thai massage (our Thai massage in Inverness treatment) uses pressure points, stretching and rocking movements to improve flexibility, so it suits stiffness and restricted movement. Deep tissue massage in Inverness concentrates on the deeper muscles, so it suits specific knots in the calves, thighs and glutes. If you have both stiffness and knots, a combined Thai and oil massage blends Thai techniques with oil work.
Traditional Thai massage is usually done without oil, with you fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothes. If you would rather have oil, you can choose a Thai and oil massage or an aromatic oil massage instead, so the choice between Thai massage with or without oil is yours.
What about a full body massage in Inverness?
If your legs, hips, back and shoulders all need attention, session length matters. A 90-minute session gives a therapist more time to cover both legs, the hips and the back than a 60-minute session does, and 120 minutes is available for traditional Thai and combined Thai and oil massage. Choose a longer session if you want a full body massage in Inverness after several days on the trail. Sessions are tailored to individual needs, so say where it hurts when you arrive.
When is the best time to book a massage after the Skye Trail?
The review measured soreness at 24, 48 and 72 hours after exercise, and the gap between massage and no massage was widest at 48 and 72 hours. Booking within one to three days of finishing lines up with the window the research measured. Cholly’s is open every day, Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00, which makes that window easy to hit. You can book online or call 07726 470591.
When you arrive, tell your therapist about blisters, sore spots, recent injuries and how much pressure you like. That helps them adjust the treatment to your body.

Cholly’s is a Thai massage practice at 5 Market Brae Steps in Inverness. She works alongside Monnie Lertwongwisan, a qualified therapist trained in traditional Thai massage, aromatherapy and oil massage, and foot massage.

If you are driving, the Highland Council’s Rainings Stairs car park on Ardconnel Street is the parking option listed on the Cholly’s website.
The practice shows 193 Google reviews on its website. One reviewer who arrived in Inverness with a very sore body after the Skye Trail said the Thai and oil massage was exactly what they needed and left them feeling much better.
When should you see a GP instead of booking a massage?
Muscle soreness is normal after a big walk. Some symptoms are not. The NHS lists the signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot in a deep vein that usually affects the leg: throbbing pain in one leg, usually in the calf or thigh, swelling in one leg, warm skin around the painful area, and red or darkened skin. The NHS says these symptoms rarely affect both legs. If you think you have a DVT, ask for an urgent GP appointment or contact NHS 111. Call 999 or go to A&E if you also have chest pain or breathlessness.
Get medical advice before booking if you have sharp pain after a twist or fall, pain that is getting worse instead of easing, or swelling around a joint. Tell your therapist about any health condition, pregnancy or recent injury before treatment starts. Massage is not a substitute for a medical assessment, and this article is general information rather than medical advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is massage good for sore legs after hiking?
It can help. A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Physiology pooled 11 articles with 504 participants and found lower muscle soreness in people who received massage after strenuous exercise than in people who received no intervention. The review covered massage in general rather than hiking or Thai massage specifically, so results vary from person to person.
When is the best time to get a massage after the Skye Trail?
The research measured soreness at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The difference between massage and no massage was larger at 48 hours (standardised mean difference of −1.51) and 72 hours (−1.46) than at 24 hours (−0.61). Booking within one to three days of finishing the Skye Trail fits that window, and Cholly’s is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.
Is Thai massage or deep tissue better after a multi-day walk?
It depends on the ache. Traditional Thai massage uses pressure points and stretching, so it suits stiff hips and general tightness. Deep tissue massage focuses on releasing deep muscle tension, so it suits specific knots in the calves, thighs or glutes. A combined Thai and oil massage blends Thai techniques with oil massage for deeper relaxation and muscle pain relief. Cholly’s offers all three.
Does Thai massage use oil?
Traditional Thai massage is usually done without oil, with the client fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing, and it uses stretches and pressure along the body. If you prefer oil, Cholly’s also offers a combined Thai and oil massage and an aromatic oil massage.
How much does a massage cost at Cholly’s in Inverness?
At the time of writing, 60-minute treatments including traditional Thai, deep tissue, combined Thai and oil, foot massage, and back, neck and shoulders massage cost £55. 90-minute sessions cost £80, and 120-minute sessions cost £100 for traditional Thai or £105 for combined Thai and oil. Prices were checked on the Cholly’s website on 8 October 2026 and may change.
What should I do after a Thai massage?
Take it easy for the rest of the day, drink some water and give your muscles time to settle. Some tenderness or tiredness can follow deeper work. If you notice sharp pain, swelling, or pain that gets worse instead of easing, speak to your GP or call NHS 111.
Is Cholly’s open on Sundays?
Yes. Cholly’s Thai Massage & Therapy is open Monday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, at 5 Market Brae Steps, Inverness. You can book online or call 07726 470591.
